LO1 Task 1

CBS is an American broadcast television and radio network which focuses on making  television series for older audiences, its most popular genres being crime, action, and sports,  but it also has licenses to shows in the sci-fi genre such as Star Trek. One of its more well known shows is NCIS. All of these appeal to older and more mature audiences as they have more violent and graphic ideas inside of them such as terrorism and murder however due to the theory on desensitization as even though it is advertised to the more mature audiences, it is likely that younger audiences also watch the shows as they aren't effected or opposed to these ideas or images.

While they are based in America and broadcast American shows, CBS actually distributes its shows internationally, through synergy, it has a website and tv program in which you can simulcast new shows as new seasons are released. Moreover, they also distribute content, information and promotional material on their social media channels such as Instagram, for example they have posts talking about the shows running through the week in October, this shows that as well as advertising and entertaining audiences, CBS are also dedicated to informing their audiences of the content they will be featuring through the week, this is good as it means it can advertise on a global scale but also potentially could attract the attention for potential others to collaborate with on projects. I believe they mostly advertise on television due to the shows age, as it was first aired in 2011, social media hadn't really developed into the scale it is today, so most of the adverts will have been released on television, so all the older audiences which watched it back then may not be as knowledgeable or aware of social media and web adverts so may not look for them. However as the show is still going, I believe it to be important to use social media as well as it is a great way to attract younger audiences and new audiences since you can advertise on a global scale and target specific groups.

For the show NCIS, this portrays both men and women as strength and attacks the stereotype of how women are portrayed as weak and defenseless as they always will have a female officer. Moreover it also portrays the lower class as full of criminals, although this is to give episodes a plot, it is morally wrong to use the lower class so much, especially men, as most cases show that it is the men who are criminals, which gives them a bad image. This may lead to people fearing the lower class males as they associate them with criminals and may lead to sever consequences. To put this into perspective, looking at the law in America, people are allowed to carry firearms, if a civilian who watches the show sees them with a gun in say their pocket, they may automatically believe they are a criminal about to commit a crime. Moreover, it could possibly hint to the idea of police women being expendable due to the fact that over the course of the shows seasons, they have killed off 3 major characters, all of which are female, this may send a form of warning to females who aspire to be or already work as a police officer as they may be hinting to how easily they can be killed.
